I went to Bergen, Norway, for the past three years. I noticed the water, the fjords, the skies. This year, only the constantly shifting gray skies intrigued me. I photographed lots of clouds. Then, I walked into the museums and admired the Norwegian paintings of the 1800s, particularly the skies. I photographed lots of clouds in the paintings. I turned a corner, and there was a room at the end of a corridor with 35 paintings by J. C. Dahl—all cloud studies—as if they were waiting for my arrival.
